Abstract
A catalyst comprises a support of silica and alumina, the alumina being in the range of 20 to 40% by weight of the silica and alumina, and at least one component consisting of iron, cobalt, nickel, molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium or tin, or an oxide or sulphide of such a metal. The support may contain magnesia in an amount not exceeding 10% by weight of the silica, alumina and magnesia. Mixtures of compounds may be used, such as nickel molybdate, tungstate, thiomolybdate or thiotungstate; mixtures of nickel oxides with molybdenum or tungsten oxide; cobalt-molybdena, cobalt thiomolybdena; and tungsten sulphide and nickeltungsten sulphide. The silica-alumina support may be treated with a cationic, anionic or non-ionic surface-active agent. The catalyst is used for the hydrocracking of residual petroleum fractions at 700 DEG to 1000 DEG F., at a pressure of 500 to 3000 p.s.i.g., and treating 0.5 to 5 pounds of oil per pound of catalyst per hour. In an example aluminium sulphate solution is added to a solution of sodium silicate and sulphuric acid to obtain a silica-alumina gel, which is impregnated with a solution of ammonium molybdate and cobalt nitrate, dried, pelleted and calcined. The catalyst is heated in a stream of hydrogen, and then in hydrogen sulphide to convert the cobalt and molybdenum oxides to sulphides, followed by hydrogen again, and a virgin gas oil is cracked by passing it over the heated catalyst. Specification 816,307 is referred to.
