Abstract

Hydrocarbon oils are purified and freed from sulphur compounds by passing the vaporized oil together with hydrogen over a catalyst consisting of molybdenum or its compounds mixed with zinc and magnesium oxides, at a temperature of 200 to 450 DEG C. and under a pressure not exceeding 10 atmospheres. Crude benzol vapours are mixed with hydrogen preheated to 230 DEG C. and pass at atmospheric pressure through a reaction tube heated to 400 DEG C. and containing a mixture of molybdenum, zinc and magnesium oxides. Molybdenum oxide may be replaced by ammonium molybdate. The process effects decomposition of the sulphur compounds with the formation of sulphuretted hydrogen, without destructively hydrogenating the oil. Specification 345,738 is referred to.
