Abstract

578,872. Gas-purifying processes. EGERTON, A. C. G. Dec. 3, 1940, No. 17185. [Class 55 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] Gases containing sulphur compounds, or unsaturated hydrocarbons, or both, are purified by being subjected to cooling by liquid methane. The cooling may be effected by bringing the cooling medium into direct contact with the gases, or indirectly by passage of the gases through a coil immersed in the liquefied methane. Where the gases contain hydrogen sulphide, water vapour, or carbon dioxide, the prior removal of these constituents is desirable. The process is applicable to the purification of mixed gases such as water gas and coal gas employed in the synthesis of methane. A plurality of coolers in series may be used, the first acting as a pre-cooler or a heat exchanger through which the gases to be treated are passed in indirect contact with the gaseous methane arising from evaporation of the liquid methane.
