Abstract
Hydrate forming hydrocarbon gases are converted into hydrates by treatment with water and the hydrates are maintained in a stream of a liquid carrier which is pre-cooled considerably below normal atmospheric temperature and then brought into contact with the hydrates. To form small crystals of hydrates the gas and water are brought into contact in presence of a non-aqueous carrier, preferably by first emulsifying the water with the carrier, and the carrier, which may be a mineral oil fraction such as kerosene, gas oil, or a light lubricating fraction, serves to convey the hydrates from the converter to a storage vessel. Thus a gas containing methane, ethane, propanes and butanes together with impurities such as hydrogen sulphide, carbon dioxide, helium, oxygen and nitrogen, is introduced along with a mist or emulsion of water at the top of a converter which is kept at 35-40 DEG F. and 400-650 lb. per sq. in. The specific gravity of the carrier is preferably the same as that of the hydrates, and an emulsifying agent such as a soap or organic salt may be added. The hydrates may be cooled in the storage zone and kept at about 25 lb. per sq. in. and the hydrocarbons are released by reduction of pressure or by heating. Specification 568,290 is referred to.
