Abstract
A catalyst, for converting hydrocarbons into combustible gases, which has been obtained from a melting or sintering process (e.g. blast furnace slag or cement clinker) and which contains calcium, magnesium, alumina and silica, is characterized by the components being present in such percentages by weight that the proportion <FORM:0852943/III/1> is between 1 and 4, preferably between 1.5 and 2. The following features of the catalyst are preferred:- (1) it has a content exceeding 50% of one or more of Gehlenite, Akermanite, tricalcium and trimagnesium silicates; (2) its alumina content does not exceed 20%; (3) it is supported on an inert carrier such as coke. In examples, the catalyst contains, besides the essential constituents, minor proportions of MnO, Fe2O3 and S. The catalyst can be regenerated, oxidatively or with steam.
