Abstract

Calcined iron ore is mixed with a catalytic agent consisting of bauxite, lime and sodium bicarbonate and is reduced at 800 DEG -900 DEG C. with natural gas, which is converted by the catalyst into carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The proportions of the additives may be 3-5% bauxite, 1-3% quick lime and 0.5-1% bicarbonate, the percentages being by weight and based on the weight of ore. Pig-iron chips may also be added to the mixture, while the reduction may be carried out in a fluidized bed.ALSO:A catalytic composition for converting methane into carbon monoxide and hydrogen during the reduction of iron ore consists of alumina, quicklime and sodium bicarbonate with or without the addition of pig-iron chips. The former three constituents are preferably added in amounts of 3-5%, 1-3%, and 0.5-1% respectively based on the weight of iron ore treated, while an addition of 3% of pig iron chips is exemplified. The reaction is carried out at 800 DEG -900 DEG C., possibly in a fluidised bed.
