Abstract
A copper sodium silicate catalyst, e.g. the catalyst of Specification 758,731 which consists of reduced copper promoted by a small amount of sodium silicate, is freed from carbonaceous residue by passing a hot gas of oxygen content less than 1 1/2 volume per cent, e.g. superheated steam and air, over it at a temperature above 212 DEG F. but below the sintering temperature of copper (about 700 DEG F.) until the copper is substantially completely oxidized. The temperature may be increased in steps up to the maximum, and is then raised above the sintering temperature until all the carbonaceous residue is removed. The catalyst is then activated by hydrogenating and used to hydrogenate furfural.
