Abstract

A flexible method for the production of motor fuels and jet fuels from a hydrocarbon liquid fraction boiling between 400 DEG and 900 DEG F. by contacting the hydrocarbon in the presence of hydrogen under hydrocracking conditions with a hydrocracking catalyst comprising a hydrogenating component selected from the group consisting of metals and oxides of metals of Group VI or VIII, comprises recovering from the reaction product a motor fuel having an end point of about 400 DEG F., recycling to the hydrocracking zone a reaction product fraction boiling above the motor fuel range when less than 60% of the metallic hydrogenation components of the catalyst are sulphided, and recovering from the reaction product a fraction boiling through the jet fuel range when more than 60% of solid components of the catalyst are sulphided, addition of sulphur being controlled in dependence on the fuel which is to be produced, sulphur being removed from the feed to the hydrocracking zone as the production of motor fuel is to be promoted, and sulphur being added to or allowed to remain in the feed to the hydrocracking zone when the production of jet fuel is to be promoted. Sulphur compounds may be added to the hydrogen or the charge stock or may be those naturally present in the charge stock. To produce motor fuel over a prolonged period the charge stock must first be desulphurized. The catalyst may be chromium, tungsten, cobalt, nickel, platinum, palladium, osmium or rhodium on a base of silica-alumina, silica-magnesia, silica-titania, silica-zirconia or a clay; the base may be treated with HF. The base may also be a molecular sieve.
