Abstract

Petroleum distillates boiling between 150 DEG and 450 DEG C. are contacted with a catalyst consisting of the oxides of cobalt and molybdenum on a silica/alumina support, and containing by weight of the total catalyst 5-14% silica, more than 15% and up to and including 20% molybdenum oxide, and preferably 1-4% cobalt oxide, in the presence of hydrogen at a temperature of at least 400 DEG C., but below that at which 20% of the feed is cracked to materials boiling below 150 DEG C., under a pressure of at least 7 kg./cm.2 and preferably not exceeding 70 kg./cm.2 and a space velocity not exceeding 3 v./v./hr., such that the pour-point of the product is at least 5 DEG C. lower than that of the feed. The hydrogen-hydrocarbon mole ratio is preferably 5:1 to 20:1.
