Abstract

Gas oils boiling in the range 600 DEG -1100 DEG F. and hydrogen are passed to a reaction zone containing a fixed bed of a hydrofining catalyst, the hydrofining conditions in the zone being a temperature of 500 DEG -1000 DEG F. and a pressure of 50 p.s.i.g.-3,000 p.s.i.g. The hydrogen rate is 50-10,000 SCF/Bbl and the feed rate is 0,1-5 V./V./Hr. The catalyst comprises 1,15%-5,5% by weight of cobalt expressed as cobalt oxide and 8,5%-16,5% by weight of molybdenum expressed as molybdena on a gamma type alumina, said alumina having a surface area of 200 m2/gm.-240 m2/gm. and an average pore diameter of 70-100 , having been prepared by calcining at 1050 DEG -1250 DEG F. under such conditions, including time, that the desired surface area and pore diameter are obtained. The catalyst is essentially free of other elements.
