Abstract

A process for producing a lubricating oil comprises contacting a sulphided catalyst consisting of one of the metals W, Cr or Mo and one of the metals Ni, Co or Fe supported upon a carrier material of minimum cracking activity equivalent to 14,1% on the Kellogg scale (described in the Specification) with a stream of liquid deasphalted hydrocarbon charge oil in admixture with a stream of hydrogen under hydrogenation conditions of 343 DEG -441 DEG C., 105-700 kg./cm.2 guage pressure, L.H.S.V. 0,25-2,0 and 56-420 S.C.M. hydrogen/barrel of charge oil, and separating a high quality lubricating oil fraction from the reaction product or effluent. The catalyst may be halogen-promoted (F or Cl); suitable carrier materials are, e.g. alumina, silica-alumina and magnesia-silica. Calcium alumino-silicate is stated to be unsuitable as a carrier material, although falling within the above definition, since the presence of Ca has a disruptive effect on good cracking characteristics.
