Abstract

Hydrocarbon fractions boiling above 150 DEG C., for example petroleum fractions, or distillate fractions boiling between 150 DEG and 450 DEG C., and which may contain sulphur are heated in a process comprising contacting the fraction in the presence of hydrogen with a catalyst, comprising a platinum group metal, e.g. platinum or palladium, on a support containing a major proportion of alumina and at least 1% weight of halogen, e.g. fluorine or chlorine, at a temperature of at least 600 DEG F. and a pressure of at least 100 p.s.i.g., the temperature and space velocity used being correlated to give a product boiling above 150 DEG C. having a pour point at least 5 DEG F. lower than the pour point of the feedstock. Suitable catalyst supports include alumina with or without oxides of metals of Group II, III and IV of the Periodic Table, e.g. silica, titania, zirconia, and beryllia, preferably in amounts of 5-25% weight. Compounds of non-metals of Group III, IV and V, such as boron or phosphorus may also be present, preferably in amounts of 5-25% weight. Preferred operating conditions are 700-950 DEG F., pressure 100-1500 p.s.i.g. Space velocity 0 : 1-8 v/v/hr., hydrogen/hydrocarbon mole ratio 1 : 1 to 20 : 1. Specifications 943,237 and 943,239 are referred to.ALSO:Hydrocarbon fractions boiling above 150 DEG C., for example petroleum fractions, or distillate fractions boiling between 150 and 450 DEG C., and which may contain sulphur, are heated in a process comprising contacting the fraction in the presence of hydrogen with a catalyst, comprising a platinum group metal, e.g. platinum or palladium, on a support containing a major proportion of alumina and at least 1% weight of halogen, e.g. fluorine or chlorine, at a temperature of at least 600 DEG F. and a pressure of at least 100 p.s.i.g., the temperature and space velocity used being correlated to give a product boiling above 150 DEG C. having a pour point at least 5 DEG F. lower than the pour point of the feedstock. The catalyst may contain 1-10% of halogen and 0,01-5% of the platinum metal. Examples disclose 0,75% Pt, 0,35% F, and 1,2% or 2,0% C1 on alumina, 0,58% Pt, 0,81% C1, 6,3% or 6,0% F on alumina.
