Abstract
A catalyst for aromatizing hydrocarbons comprises 0.01-5% of platinum and 0.01-5% of an alkaline-earth (including magnesium) metal in combined form on a support of alumina and/or silica. The higher proportions of alkaline-earth metals are used when halogens such as chlorine or fluorine are present, but the catalyst is preferably halogen-free and contains up to 3% of alkaline-earth metal. The catalysts are prepared by heating a platinum catalyst supported on alumina and/or silica to 150-600 DEG C., contacting the cooled catalyst with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble salt of the alkaline-earth metal, preferably a fatty acid salt, removing excess solution if necessary, drying at a temperature above 30 DEG C. and below the roasting temperature and roasting at 200-600 DEG C.ALSO:The aromatization of non-aromatic hydrocarbons containing at least 5 carbon atoms in the molecule is effected by contacting at 300-600 DEG C. and not more than 50 p.s.i.g. in the absence of added extraneous or recycle hydrogen with a catalyst comprising a minor proportion of platinum (preferably 0.01-5%) deposited on or incorporated in alumina and/or silica and preferably being halogen-free and which may also contain 0.01-5% of an alkaline-earth metal or magnesium in combined form (see Group III). The process may be applied to the aromatization of specific hydrocarbons, e.g. nhexane or n-heptane, or to the upgrading of petroleum fractions such as a primary flash distillate or a catalytic (e.g. platinum) reformate. Pressures below atmospheric may be used, but atmospheric pressure is preferred; space velocities of 0.1-1.0 vol./vol./hr. can be used.
