Abstract
Middle distillate oils boiling in the range 149-357 DEG C. are obtained by hydrocracking a feed boiling above 357 DEG C. and containing at least 100 p.p.m. of nitrogen at 427-482 DEG C. with at least 89 SCM hydrogen per 100 litres of feed and a hydrogen partial pressure of 28-84 kg./cm.2 in the presence of a sulphided nicel-tungsten catalyst supported on a siliceous base having a cracking activity index of above 45 while maintaining a conversion to products boiling in the range 38-357 DEG C. of 20-50 and continuing for a throughput of at least 1200 volumes of feed per volume of catalyst. Product boiling above 357 DEG C. may be recycled or catalytically cracked. Nitrogen should be added to the feed if necessary in the form of more nitrogenous feed or amines to maintain up to 0.3% nitrogen and the feed should also preferably contain 0.1-2% sulphur. Space velocities of 2-8 vol./vol./hr. are used. Fresh catalyst may be treated with feed at 316-427 DEG C. for 8-24 hours prior to use. Catalyst is regenerated when conversion falls too low or when a temperature of 482 DEG C. to maintain conversion is reached.
