Abstract

A method for the catalytic cracking of hydrocarbons employs as a catalyst composition a crystalline aluminosilicate with a total hydrogen in content of at least 0.5 equivalents per grain atom of aluminium and a total alkali metal content of less than 0.25 equivalents per grain atom of aluminium, such aluminosilicate being intimately mixed with a matrix. The crystalline aluminosilicates used in this invention are obtained by heating any natural or synthetic crystalline aluminosilicate either before or after its incorporation in the matrix with a fluid medium, preferably water, containing hydrogen ions or ions capable of conversion to hydrogen ions, e.g. ammonium ions until the desired concentration is reached. Long lists of suitable zeolites and clays is supplied. The matrix may be an inert or catalytically active material, and is preferably a siliceous gel matrix. The matrix and the aluminosilicate may be combined in a variety of ways. The siliceous gel matrix may also consist of a plural gel comprising a predominant amount of silica with one or more metals or oxides thereof selected from Groups II, III, IV, V, VI, VII and VIII of the Periodic Table. The cracking activity of the catalyst is illustrated by its ability to catalyze the conversion of a Mid-Continent Gas Oil having a boiling range of 450-950 DEG F. to gasoline having an end point of 410 DEG F. Vapours of the gas oil are passed through the catalyst at temperatures of 875 DEG or 900 DEG F. substantially at atmospheric pressure and a feed rate of 1.3 to 16.0 volumes of liquid oil per volume of catalyst per hour for ten minutes.
