Vinyl halides, specifically the chloride, are produced by reacting acetylene with hydrogen halide at an elevated temperature in presence of a catalyst comprising a porous carrier impregnated with mercuric chloride and coated with silica.ALSO:A vinyl halide synthesis catalyst comprises a porous carrier such as alumina, pumice or carbon, impregnated with mercuric chloride and coated with silica.
