Abstract
Organic fluorine compounds are made by heating chlorine trifluoride with an unsaturated, not fully-fluorinated, carbon compound in which all the hydrogen atoms have been replaced by halogen atoms. Starting materials specified are halogenated carbon compounds having conjugated double bonds such as hexachlorobutadiene and compounds derived from aromatic hydrocarbons by replacement of all hydrogen by halogen atoms, e.g. hexachlorobenzene, octachloronaphthalene and decachlorodiphenyl. The halogenated reactant may be suspended in a portion of the product and vaporized chlorine trifluoride passed through until the mixture becomes homogeneous when more starting material is added and the process repeated. Alternatively the suspending material may be obtained by reacting chlorine trifluoride with a hydrocarbon or refined white spirit by the process of Specification 633,678. In examples, products containing fluorine and chlorine are obtained when chlorine trifluoride is passed into (1) and (2) hexachlorobenzene suspended in a portion of a previous product; (3) octachloro-naphthalene suspended in a portion of a previous product; (4) decachlorodiphenyl suspended in a portion of a product from (3); and (5) hexachlorobutadiene.
