Abstract
Longifolene (C15H24) is treated with chlorine to give a mixture of products having an average chlorine content of 3 to 8 chlorine atoms per longifolene molecule and showing pesticidal properties. The hydrocarbon is treated with dry chlorine in the presence of iodine in a quartz flask subjected to the rays from a mercury-vapour lamp, fractions being withdrawn successively when the desired increase in weight has taken place. The preferred product is that containing 3-4 chlorine atoms per molecule of longifolene, which gives four fractions on distillation, showing on analysis compositions corresponding to di-, tri-, tetra- and penta-chloro-longifolenes respectively.ALSO:Pesticidal compounds, or mixtures of such compounds, are obtained by the introduction of 3 to 8 chlorine atoms into longifolene (C15 H24), the preferred product having 3-4 chlorine atoms per molecule of longifolene. Such products may be used against insects or bacteria, Calandria granaria, L., being specified.
