Abstract

Fluorochlorobutanes are obtained by the action of chlorine trifluoride or chlorine monofluoride or both these simultaneously or successively in either order on tetrachlorobutadiene ; mixed products are obtained. The initial mixed product from the action of ClF3 may be treated with ClF to give further pentafluoropentachlorobutane or hexafluorotetrachlorobutane. In examples, tetrachlorobutadiene is treated with ClF3 mixed with nitrogen at first, and the product fractionated, or further treated with ClF, giving products containing hexafluorotetrachloro-, pantafluoropentachloro-, and tetrafluorhexachloro-butanes ; the two former are also produced by the action of ClF directly on tetra-chlorobutadiene. The products may be dechlorinated, e.g. with alcohol and Zn dust, to give tetrafluorodichloro-, hexafluoroand pentafluoromonochloro-butadiene.
