Abstract
Fluorine-containing organic compounds are prepared by reacting chlorine tri- or monofluoride or both these compounds consecutively, at elevated temperature in the vapour phase with a halogen-substituted hydrocarbon, none or not all of which substituents are fluorine. Paraffinic or olefinic hydrocarbons such as chlorofluoromethanes, ethanes and propanes and perchloroethylene and hexachloropropene are used and the vapours are preferably passed through one or more heated reaction tubes, e.g. of nickel packed with nickel turnings with electric heating. The product vapours are cooled and scrubbed with sodium chloride and aqueous alkali, condensed and fractionated. In a modification the hydrocarbon is first chlorinated to substitute any hydrogen by chlorine. Examples describe the treatment of perchloroethylene, trichlorotrifluoroethane, trichlorodifluoroethane, and dichlorodifluoromethane. The fully halogenated products are useful as refrigerants, aerosol propellants and solvents. Specifications 738,289, 774,737 and 878,585 are referred to.
