Abstract

Chlorofluoroalkanes containing at least one hydrogen atom on a carbon atom adjacent to a carbon atom having a chlorine atom are dehydrochlorinated to give the corresponding fluoroalkene by maintaining them at a temperature between 500 DEG C. and 730 DEG C. for between 1 and 60 seconds in the presence of a copper catalyst. Preferably 1:1:1-chlorodifluoroethane or 1-chloro-2:2-difluoroethane is treated to give vinylidene fluoride, and 1:1-dichloro-1:2:2 -trifluorethane gives trifluorochloroethylene. Specified catalysts include metallic copper, brass and copper chloride supported on magnesium fluoride. Details are given of the dehydrochlorination of 1:1:1-chlorodifluoroethane.
