Abstract

Vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride and mixtures thereof are made by contacting 1 : 1-dichloroethane and 1 : 1 : -trichloroethane and mixtures thereof respectively at a temperature between 150 DEG C. and 500 DEG C. with a salt or oxide of a metal of groups I, II, IV, V, VI and VII of the periodic table. Suitably the catalyst is a metal halide such as zinc, magnesium, cadmium, copper or manganese chloride, supported on a carrier such as pumice, silica, silica gel, asbestos, charcoal, magnesia, silica-alumina, diatomaceous earths or preferably, activated alumina. Many other catalysts are specified. The reaction may be carried out as a batch operation or continuously, the preferred method being a continuous operation using the catalyst as a packed bed or, more suitably, in the fluidized condition. The preferred temperature range is from 250 DEG to 320 DEG C. The reaction conditions permit selective dehydrochlorination of 1 : 1-dichloroethane in the presence of 1 : 2-dichloroethane at 150 DEG to 320 DEG C., whereby vinyl chloride and 1 : 2-dichloroethane may be separately recovered from the reaction mixture. Examples describe the dehydrochlorination of 1 : 1-dichloroethane and 1 : 1 : 1-trichloroethane in the presence of a number of specified catalysts according to the invention.
