Abstract

Anhydrous hydrofluoric acid is obtained from ordinary high percentage acid by fractional distillation using a fractionating column. The column is maintained externally at about the boiling point of hydrogen fluoride, or is externally heat insulated and p provided with a dephlegmator or reflux cooler. The acid remaining in the still may be concentrated by distillation with sulphuric acid and used again. The apparatus may be of iron and the fractionating effected at pressures other than atmospheric.
