Abstract
1,194,501. Glycolide. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. 1 Jan., 1968 [14 Feb., 1967], No. 143/68. Heading C2C. Substantially pure glycolide of the formula is prepared from a recrystallized partially purified glycolide containing some impurities by heating a layer of partially purified glycolide to a temperature of from 85‹ to 130‹ C. under a pressure not greater than 2À5 mm. of mercury absolute, while providing a cooling surface, cooled constantly to a temperature not greater than 42‹ C., positioned vertically immediately above the glycolide layer, whereby the glycolide is sublimed and becomes deposited in substantially pure form on the cooling surface from where it may be recovered. The glycolide so purified is suitable for polymerization to a high molecular weight polymer.
