Abstract

A process of reducing iron ores in a blast furnace comprises increasing the heat available at the normal tuyere level and injecting at the critical zone an oxygen reformed hydrocarbon material at a temperature above the critical temperature. The oxygen reformed hydrocarbon material may be obtained by partial combustion of a liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon to produce a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The temperature obtained by this reaction is higher than the critical temperature and may be controlled by the addition of steam to produce an injection temperature of 1350-1600 DEG C. The additional heat at the normal tuyere level may be obtained by using an oxygen enriched blast and the furnace may be operated with a top pressure of up to 2.5 atmospheres. The process may also be used in the manufacture of ferro alloys. It is stated that a considerable reduction in coke consumption is obtained.
