Abstract

Gaseous-fuel furnaces; steam-generator furnaces; grates; ash-pits.-A gas generator 2 is arranged at the rear of a mechanically-fed furnace, preferably a travelling grate furnace 1, so that any unconsumed fuel from the grate is converted into gaseous fuel, which is directed back through a connecting channel 15 between the generator and the rear of the grate so as to pass partly or completely over the grate. Ashes are removed from the generator 2 by crushing rollers 9 into an ash-pit or other receptacle. Air is supplied from a fan bv a pipe 13, the fan and the crushing rollers being driven by a motor which may be automatically controlled as described in Specification 203,270. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, some of the gases are led through a valve-controlled passage 21 to the ignition zone beneath the arch 23. The airsupply for the generator 2 is obtained through a pipe 19 from the grate ash-pit 26, to which air is delivered by pipes 27. The discharge outlet 6 of the generator depends into a water-seal in the ash-pit 29. The vault 24, 25 may be provided with baffling arches.
