Abstract
182,498. Reid, J. Jan. 7, 1921. Air supply, regulating; grates.-A hollow dead plate or air-distributing box extends downwardly from the fuel opening of internally fired steam boilers to the grate, air being supplied to fuel resting against the dead plate through perforations or between bars forming the front of the dead plate. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the hollow dead plate is constituted by short, steeply sloping bars 8 resting at their lower ends on a bearer 13. At the sides of the fire-box 1 are hollow baflles and air casings. Valves 3 control the supply of air passing above and below the grate and to the hollow dead plate. The depending diaphragms 17 distribute the flow of air over the grate. The adjustable diaphragm 19, Fig. 5, guides the air from the ash-pit to the hollow dead plate, which is in this case a perforated casting 18.
