Abstract

Air supply, regulating; baffles; grates; doorframes.-The ashpit of a furnace is divided longitudinally into compartments into each of which air is admitted at the front end through the adjustable ashpit door 10 and adjustable opening 12. The air entering below the door 10 passes to the under surface of the grate over which it is distributed by one or more baffles 19 while the air entering above the door and through the opening 12 is distributed over the front end of the furnace. An adjustable hollow ' director ' 14 delivers part of the air to openings in a dead-plate or bearer 13 while ' top air ' is admitted through an opening 16 in the sill of the door frame which is provided with a partition 18 separating the opening 16 from an opening 17 admitting air to the hollow perforated door frame. A modification is described in which the lower end of the baffle 19 is hinged and extends to the bottom of the ash-pit while the air director 14 is replaced by a hinged plate and the portion 18 by a curved plate extending to the ashpit front below the opening 12.
