Air, supplying; fire-bars and grates; furnace fronts; baffles; ash-pans; fire-bridges.-Longitudinal partitions provided with upwardly and rearwardly inclined ribs are arranged immediately beneath a furnace grate to form longitudinal air passages open at the bottom and covered at the top with shallow fire-bars. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the partitions may be constituted by deep fire-bars l having ribs l<1> and a strengthening flange l<2> at the bottom. These bars are preferably deepest at their forward ends and may be cast integrally with lateral shallow bars. The main grate is below the level of the firing-opening f and is provided at the front with inclined bars i as described in Specification 182,498. Air from the hollow furnace front is directed by a plate p between the partitions and through the inclined grate bars i. Air entering the ash-pit is directed at the rear of the ash-pit upwardly towards the grate by a curved plate q attached to the ash-pan or forming part of the bridge. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, partitions l<x> having ribs l<1> are arranged beneath the ordinary grate bars l to form passages opening at the front into a box or chamber n. Steam or air jets may be employed to increase the flow of air to the passages between the partitions.
