Firebars and grates; ashpits.-In grates having means for altering the effective grate area, imperforate transverse plates Dx of width equal to two, three or more firebars are adapted to be inserted in place of the transevrse firebars B. The plates D<x> may be arranged so as to form a continuation of the rear dead-plate D<1> as shown or of the front dead-plate. D. The ashpit is closed by a plate S and supplied with steam by a jet J with inclined guide plates J<1>, J<2>, air being admitted at O. A door L<1> is carried by the rear dead-plate D' and holes D<3> are provided in the part D<2> depending from this dead-plate, closable by a flap, in order to assist starting up the furnace.
