Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented July 20, 1920.
Application filed August 28. 1919. Serial No. 320.464.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Max M. TENESCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kelso, in the county of San Bernardino and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Air-Preheaters for Furnaces,*of which the following is a specifi cation.
My object is to make an air preheater for furnaces, and my invention consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a steam locomotive provided with an air preheater in accordance with the principles of my invention, parts being broken away and shown in section.
Fig. 2 1s a vertical cross section on the 'line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
The cold air collecting box 1 is built into the smoke box 2 behind the smoke stack 3 and at the top, and the hot air collecting box 4: is built into the smoke box 2 at the bottom. The air heating tubes 5 connect the stack front wall of the cold air box 1 to the front wall of the hot air box l, said tubes being curved forwardly and to the sides of the and the exhaust nozzle out of the path of the smoke and the exhaust steam to the stack and spread apart to fill the smoke box chamber 6 forwardly and at the sides of the stack and the exhaust nozzle as well as may be so that the smoke and exhaust steam will pass freely out through the stack and so that the tubes 5 will be subjected to the heat coming through the boiler 7.
The pipe 8 leads from the bottom of the box l downwardly and backwardly to the ash box 9 and the air passes from the ash box 9 upwardly through the grates 10 to the combustion chamber 11.
The cold air collecting box 1 is open at the top and a collecting hood 19 is placed over the opening and extends upwardly and forwardly from the rear side, so that when-the locomotive is moving forwardly fresh air will pass inwardly through the opening 13 under the collecting hood 12 and downwardly into the chamber 1i of the box 1 and then through the tubes 5 to the chamber 15 of the box 1, and from the chamber 15 the air will pass through the pipe 8 to the chamber 16 in the ash box 9. The grates 10 will serve to distribute the air to the combustion chamber 11.
The uses and advantages are obvious.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
1 claim:
In combination with a steam locomotive, a cold air collecting box in the upper part of the smoke box, a hot air collecting box in the lower PRIbul the smoke box, a plurality of spaced tubes connecting said cold air collecting box anc i said hot air collecting box, said tubes curving forwardly and to the sides of the stack and the exhaust nozzle out of the path of the smoke from the fire box, and the steam from the exhaust, to the stack.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
MAX M. TENESGH.
