THE NORRIS PETERS CO" FHOTU-LITHO, WASHINGTON, D. Cv
' TO JOSEPH W. SMITI-I, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SMOKE AND GAS CONSUMER.
, Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. August 26, 1914. Serial No. 858,595.
To all whom it may concern Be .it known that I, WILLIAM H. TOPLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke and Gas Consumers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in smoke and gas consumers, the object of the invention being to provide a furnace with an improved construction of combined bridge wall and baffle located at the inner end of the fire box, and compelling air in a highly heated condition to commingle with the smoke and gases in a space between parallel walls having openings therethrough of an area equal to the area of the tubes of the boiler, so that the maximum of heat units of the fuel is obtained, a better combustion is had, and the escape of smoke and gases is reduced to a minimum.
A further object is to provide an improved construction of the character stated in which the supply of air can be controlled to suit conditions, and which will add but little additional cost to the construction of any ordinary steam boiler furnace.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a View in vertical longitudinal section illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view in horizontal transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a view in horizontal transverse section on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
1 represents a steam boiler furnace of any approved construction provided with the ordinary tubular boiler 2, and divided by my improved bridge wall 3 into a front fire box 4: located below the boiler and having a grate 6 separating the fire box from the ash pit 7 below.
The bridge wall 3 is provided at its upper edge with a supporting partition 5 extending to the boiler 2, and composed of fire brick. This partition 5 is located at the rear of the bridge Wall 3, and constitutes an extension thereof appreciably thinnerthan the bridge wall so as to provide arelatively wide ledge 8 at the front of the bridge wall, and said partition 5 is provided with openings 9 corresponding in area to the area of V the boiler tubes.
.Back of the bridge wall 3, a second wall 10 is located. This wall 10 is provided at its upper portion with openings 11 in line with and corresponding in area to the openings 9.
Intermediate the ends of the wall 10, a forwardly extending ledge 12 is provided.
This ledge 12 has a tapering lower face 13 which acts as a deflecting surface to direct air forwardly and through the narrow opening 14: between the ledge 12 and the bridge wall 3 as will be more fully hereinafter'explained.
The bridge wall 3 is provided with an opening 1 1 communicating with the ash pit 7 and this opening 1 1 is adapted to be closed by a hinged damper 15. The opening 14 constitutes an entrance for air, and
Patented May 25, 1915.
the rear face of the bridge wall 3 is recessed laterally as shown at 16, so that the air which enters the opening passes to both sides of the furnace to be evenly distributed throughout the space between the walls 3 and 10, and hence uniformly fed to the furnace.
The damper 15 may, of course, be operated by various means. I have shown for the purpose a rod 17 extending through the front wall 18 of the furnace and having lugs 19 thereon to hold the damper in various positions of adjustment.
In operation, the smoke and gases pass through the openings 9 and 11 and across the transverse opening 14, and as above stated, the openings 9 and 11 correspond in area to the area of the boiler tubes, so that said walls constitute a bafile for the smoke and gases.
The walls 5 and 10 become highly heated, so that the air in the space between the walls is highly heated before it commingles with thesmoke and gases, so that a perfect comthe fuel to the fullest extent, and reduce the escape of smoke and gases, and otherwise waste productsof combustion to a minimum. Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations. as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a furnace having a double wall at the rear of the fire box, said double Wall having openings therethrough for the passage of smoke and gases, one of said walls spaced from the other and having an opening therein for the admission of air into the space between the walls at a point below the said openings, the rear of. said pair of walls having a ledge on itsforward Copies of this patent maybe obtained for face at a point, above the plane ofithe air inlet and extending to a point adjacent the front wall, whereby a relatively narrow opening is provided between the ledge and the front wall at a point below the firstmentioned openings in the walls, substantially as described. v
2. The combination with a furnace having a double wall at the rear of the fire box, said double wall having openings therethrough for the passage of, smoke and gases, one of said walls spaced fromthe other and having an opening therein for theadmissionof air into the space between the walls at a point below the said openings, the rear of said pair of walls having a ledge on its forward face extending to a point adjacent the front wall, whereby a relatively narrow opening is provided between the ledge and the front' wall at a point below the first-mentioned openings in the walls, said ledge having an inclined lower face directing the air from below in a forward direction, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
