Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, 1914.
Application filed May 4, 1914. Serial No. 836,215.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Rinco HAWKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sandy, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke- Consumers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in smoke consumers and the primary object of the invention is to provide a perfect smoke consumer whereby all of the smoke and particles of combustion may be fully and entirely consumed and utilized, as well as effecting a more perfect and direct heating of the water in the boiler.
A further object resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient in use.
I/Vith these and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a device constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough as seen on line 2-2, Fig. 1.
In describing the invention I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which- 1 indicates a cylindrical boiler of the stationary and horizontal type, the same being provided with the usual fire tubes 2 and these tubes lead to a chamber 3 at the rear end of said boiler, the purpose of which will be hereinafter and more particularly set forth. The forward end of the boiler 1 has connection with a furnace 4 which includes at the upper end a feeding hopper 5 leading to a fire box 6 below which is arranged a chamber 7 the latter having communication with the tubes of the boiler l which are positioned in the upper half of the latter. This communication with the tubes of the upper half of the boiler is had by the provision of a division or partition wall 8 in the furnace casing which provides an additional chamher or compartment 9 below the chamber 7 said chamber 9 having communication with the tubes in the lower half of the boiler. This furnace, as will appear from the showing made in the drawing, is constructed for down draft and the front thereof is provided with a plurality of close fitting doors 10 which admit of the cleaning of the grate, the emptying of the ashes from the ash box and entrance to the last mentioned chamber 9 for any purpose desired.
Extending downwardly through the top of the chamber 7 just rearwardly of the feeding hopper 5 is a smoke stack 11 the lower end of which terminates in the division or partition wall 8, thus affording communication between the chamber 9 and said smoke stack proper. A damper 12 is provided in the smoke stack for obvious purposes.
In operation, it will be seen that the draft will be directed downwardly through the live coals in the fire box carrying the products of combustion and smoke to the cham her 7 from which point the same is directed around the lower portion of the smoke stack and through the tubes 2 in the upper half of the boiler. The products of combustion being directed rearwardly will be received in the chamber 3 at the rear end of the boiler from which point the same will be directed forwardly in the tubes in the lower half of the boiler, the same finally being received in the lower chamber 9 of the furnace. From this chamber the same are conveyed to the smoke stack 11, which communicates with said chamber 9, and thence carried to the open air. The lower portion of the smoke stack being in close proximity to the fire box will be extremely hot at all times and the products of combustion passing through the fire box to the chamber 7 and around said smoke stack will become heated and thus the unconsumed particles of combustion will be consumed. to a certain degree, at this point. In being first directed rearwardly and then forwardly, the products of combustion and smoke will thoroughly heat the water in the boiler and will, to the greatest possible degree, be thoroughly consumed, so that when finally entering the smoke stack no products will be unconsumed and the heavy smoke which is incident to the imperfect combustion in furnaces will be absent. In this mamier all of the fuel will be consumed and it will require less fuel to heat the, Water than is usual under ordinary conditions,
From the foregoing it will be seen that "I have provided a simple, inexpensive and eflicient means for carrying out the objects f t e in n a d Wh le I e Pa t eslarly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, itis obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. Ina downdraft furnace,:a horizontally arranged boiler having fire tubes therein, front and rear chambers communicating with said fire tubes-said front chamber being divided into an upper and lower compartment, a fire box arranged above the upper compartment of the front chamber and in communication with the latter, and asmoke stack in communication with the lower compartment of the front chamber.
2. In a down draft furnace, a boiler having fire tubes therein, front and rear chambers communicating with said fire tubes, said front chamber being divided to provide an upper and'lower compartment therein, a
fire box arranged in a plane above the plane of the boiler and communicating with the upper compartment of the front chamber, and a smoke stack extending through the upper compartment of said chamber and communicating with the lower compartment therein.
3. In a down draft furnace, a horizontally arranged boiler having fire tubes therein, a front and rear chamber in communication I with .said fire tubes, said front chamber being divided into an upper and lower coma lower compartment of the front chamber.
