S MOKE-PREVENTER FOR FURNACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,709, dated April 2, 1889.
7 Application filed January 21, 1889. Serial No. 296,980. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. PIGGOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certainnew and useful Improvement in Smoke-Preventers for Steam-Boiler and other Furnaces, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improved device for preventing smoke in steam-boiler and other furnaces, and has for its object to effect a thorough combustion of the gases and carbonaceous matter arising from the burning fuel in the furnace, and thereby prevent the escape of smoke into the chimney.
My invention consists in the features of novelty hereinafter described and claimed.
On the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a steam-boiler furnace with my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional elevation thereof on line- 1 l in Fig. 1, broken away,
the grate b is arranged horizontally, and preferably in line with the upper stratum of the burning fuel one 'or more of my improved smoke-preventers, each of which is composed of a central .nozzlepipe, (I, having at its rear end, adjacent to the front of the boiler e, a chamber, j, which receives steam from the boiler 6, through pipes g, which are provided with regulating-valves and arranged as shown, or in any other convenient manner.
From the inner closed end of the chamber f passages h extend longitudinally through the wall of the nozzle cl to a space, t', sur rounding the reduced cylindrical front end portion of the nozzle d, and communicating thereat with a narrow annular passage, j,
which opens through the front end of the nozzle (Z intothe furnace a.
In the nozzle d, at a suitable distance in front of the chamber f, is formed concentric with the annular passage j a central longitudinal passage, 70, which opens through the front end of the nozzle d into the furnace at, and has transverse passages k opening into a hood or casing, l, which surrounds the nozzle d at a suitable distance therefrom, and is formed with openings m for the admission (f air to the device. The front open end of the casing 1 may be extended by a pipe, Z, which opens at its front end into the furnace a at th level above referred to.
In operation, steam being admitted through the pipes g to the chamber f, as indicated by full arrows in Fig. 8, of the nozzle d, passes through the passages h into the space i and annular passages j around the front end portion of the nozzle d, from which it issues in the form of a thin cylindrical film into the pipe Z and furnace a. At the same time, owing to the partial vacuum induced within the casing l by the steamfilm, air is drawn either from the outside of the boiler or from the ashpit or other suitable points, through the openings m into the casing Z, as indicated by the dotted arrows in Fig. 3, where, surrounding the nozzle d and entering the central passage, is, it is combined with and is impelled forward by the steam into the furnace a, so that an intense heat is thereby generated within the latter and a perfect combustion of the gases effected.
I claim as my invention-- 1. In a steam-boiler or other furnace, the combination of a nozzle, d, having inlet steamchamber f, communicating by passages h with annular space 11, and outlet annular passagej, and having a central passage, is, receiving air through inlet-openings 7a, with means for admittingosteam to chamber f, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
2. In a steam-boiler or other furnace, the combination of a nozzle, (1, having inlet steamchamber fipassages h, annular space i, outlet annularpassage j, and central passage, 70, having inlet-openings 7c, hood or casing Z, surrounding the nozzle cl, and having openings m I00 for receiving air, with means for admitting niitting steam to chamber f, substantially as steam to chamber f, substantially as shown, shown, and for the purpose described. and for the purpose described. Intestiniony whereoflaflix mysignaturo, in In a steam-boiler or other furnace, the presence of two witnesses, this 18th day of 5 combination of anozzle, (1, having inlet steam- January, 1889.
chamber f, passay'es ll, annular space i, outlet annular passage j, and central passage, 7;, 11LV- ing inlotqmssnges 7c, hood or casing Z, surrounding the nozzle (7, and having extension- 10 pipe 6 and openings in, with means for 21th HENRY E. PIGGOT'J.
