Description
{Ho'ModeL} G. B. HUGHES.
FURNACE.
No. 469,664. Patented'Peb ZS, 1892.
UNITE CHRISTIAN D STATES-V PATENT OFFICE.
B. HUGHES, OF 'NILES, OHIO.
FURNACE.
Patent No. 469,664, dated February 23, 1892. 1. Saris-1H0. 393,444- (Remodel-l 1'0 all whom it may concern:
Furnace, of
clear, and exact Be it known that 1, CHRISTIAN of Niles, in th of Ohio, have- B. HUGHES,
e county of Trumbull and State invented a new and Improved which the following is a full,
description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improve and durable in construction,
to operation,
materially re d furnace which is simple very effective in insures complete combustion, and
duces the necessary amount of fuel for getting up steam or prod ncing heat for any other purposes.
The invention consistsof certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter line a:
zles.
pointed out in the claims.
line a: a; of
Fig. 3
tive View of fully described, and then the accompanying of this specification, ar letters of reference indicate tsirrall the'figuresf view of the im- Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is evation of the same on the is a. transverse secne'g y of Fig. 2, and
one ofthe noz- The improved furnace is builtof brick or 0 other suitable the fire-box which is arranged the front end the usual fuelchannels wall of the upper the rear openings of being line with the the said nozzles discharging A similar set of discharge -nozz material and is provided with A, containing the usual ash-pit C. of the v fire-box A is arranged inlet door D, and at the rear of 5 the said fire-box is the usual bridge-wall E,v below the boiler F, of suitable construction.
In the side walls of ranged longitudinally- G and G, opening the firebox, as plainly shown in 2, the inlet-openings B and in that part 0 the combustion take fire-box Aare arranged the nozzles" 5 II and H, adapted to discharge steam obliquely in the B and about in the fire-box A are arextending chambers or at their ends into Figs. 1 and above the grate f the fire-box in which s place.
- In the front superheated fire'box above the grate chambers G and l ,I is
andin obliquely across "on-the grateB the rear end of the firc-bogtinto the rear openings of the said channels. In that partof the wall extending between the channels and the fire-box are arranged air pipes or ducts K and K, leading from the ash-pit into the said channels, so as to supply the latter with heated fresh air. The nozzles H, H, I, and .I' are connected by suitable pipes with a pipe J, connected with the steam-dome of the boiler, so asto supp] the said nozzles with the necessary amount of superheated .steam. Avalve J',.held in 'the said pipe J, .servesto regulate theamouniofsnperhea e steam passing to the said nozzles.
Theaiiozzles H, H, I, and I are preferably provided with a single row of perforations, as illustrated in Fig. 4, so that the discharge of steam can be more readily directed in the desired direction.
The operation is as follows: When the fuel is-burniug and thcgoperator opens the valve .I', then jets of steam pass through the sets of nozzlesHH' and I I over the burning fuel, the jets from the front'nozzles H and- H driving the burning gases,
smoke, &c., rearward I y, while the jets of steam fromthe nozzles I I force the smoke, gases, be, into the rear openings of the channels Gr and G, so that the said gases are moved in the said chambers or channels and mixed with the hot air from the pipesKand K, the mixture again entering the front end of the fire-box to .be burned over The smoke, and gases not consumed at the return into the fire-box are again taken up by the jets of steam issuing through the nozzles I and I to be again driven through the channels G and G to the front end of the chamher to be forced over the burning fuel by the jets from the nozzles H and H. Thus i'twill beseen that by this continuous operation a complete combustion of all the gases is insured. I
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a furnace, the combination, with a fire-box provided with chambers connected at their ends with the front and rear ends of the sides ofthe combustion-chamber in front of the bridge-wall, of sets of nozzles adapted to disclu rge laterally through the said walls the burningfuelsteam in the combustion-chamber to force the gases into the rear end of the said chambers, through the latter, and out at the front ends to return the gases into the front end of the combustion-chamber, substantially as shown and described.
2. A furnace comprising a fire-box having a combustion-chamber and side gas chambers or channels extending longitudinally in the side walls of the fire-box, the ends of each chamber discharging laterally through the said walls into the front and rear ends of the combustion-chamber in front of the bridgewall, substantially as shown and described.
3. A furnace comprising a firebox having a combustion-chamber and side gas chambers or channels extending longitudinally in the side walls of the fire-box, the ends of each chamber discharging laterally through the said walls into the frontand rear ends of the combustion chamber wall, and a set of converging nozzles arranged to discharge jets of steam into and diagonally across the front end of the said combustionchamber in close proximity to the front ends of the said side gas-chambers to createa draft therein, substantiallyas shown and described.
4. A furnace comprising a fire-box having a combustion-chamber and sidegas chambers or channels extending longitudinally in the side walls of the fire box, the ends of each chamber discharging laterally through the said walls into the front and rear ends of the combustion chamber in front of the bridge wall, and a set of nozzles arranged in the rear end of the combustion-chamber and adapted to-dischargerjets of steam into the rear ends of the said side gas-chambers, as shown and described.
5. A furnace comprising a fire-box having in front of the bridge substantially a combustion-chamber and side gas chambers longitudinally in the across the 'front end of the said combustionchamber in close proximity to the front ends of the said side gas-chambers to create a draft therein, and a second set of nozzles diverging arranged in the rear of the end of the combustiou-chalnber and arranged to discharge jets of steam into the rear ends of the said sidegas-chambers, substantiallyas shown and described.
6. A furnace comprising a fire-box having a combustion-chamber and side gas chambers or channels extending longitudinally in the side walls of the fire-box, the ends of each chamber discharging laterally through the said walls into the front and rear ends of the combustion-chamber, a set of eonvergingnoz- -zles arranged to discharge jets of steam into and diagonally across the front end of the said combustion-chamber in close proximity to the front ends of the said side gasehamhers to create a'drafttherein, a second set of nozzlesarranged in'the rear of the end of the combustion-chamber and arranged to discharge jets of steam into the rear ends of the said side gas-chambers, and air-supply pipes or ducts discharging into the said side gaschambers, substantially as shown and described.
