Furnace fronts; ashpits; baffles. - An airdirecting device for steam - boiler furnaces comprises a casting f having longitudinal division-plates f<1>, f<2>, and a floor plate g bolted to the back-plate e<1> of a hollow furnace-front e below the dead-plate c. The floor plate g may be provided with an extension g<1> to direct the air to the front part of the grate. When the plate g extends only to the inner end of the, dead-plate c, fire-bars with very deep front ends and inclined fins are employed. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the plate g is hinged and provided with pins i to complete the air channels. The furnace can be worked under natural or forced draft, and the dead-plate may be slotted and deeply sloping to promote combustion at the front end of the grate. The plate h in the ash-pit directs air smoothly towards the grate.
