Shaft kilns. - A diametricallyarranged fire-box b, having a solid fuel grate b<1>, is fitted at the base of a shaft kiln for burning gypsum &c., and the communicating pas. sages b<3> between the fire-box and the kiln are shaped to prevent any part of the charge from passing into the fire - box. The kiln is of cir. cular cross-section and tapers upwards.
