Abstract
160,698. McKean, J. G., and Jones, R. F. June 3, 1920. Liquid-fuel furnaces; furnace fronts.-In a naturaldraught furnace front, adaptable for burning solid or liquid fuel, wherein ribs or fins are provided on the inner plate tangential to the axis of the fuel-atomizer, the ribs are arranged forwardly of the atomizer and lead to ports or openings in the firehole opening. The inner plate c is formed integrally with the firehole opening and with tangential ribs f which lead to ports d in the opening, the fuel-atomizer g being retracted from the plate c. A regulable air supply is admitted to the hollow front and is heated by the plate c and issues in tangential streams into the firehole opening. When burning liquid fuel, an air-director k as described in Specincation 159,080 is attached to the furnace front and the fire-bars b are covered with broken fire-brick. Additional air may be admitted by the ash-pit damper l. When reverting to solid fuel, the air-director k is replaced by a fire-door.
