Liquid-fuel furnaces. - In a liquid-fuel furnace front the burner and the flame opening are surrounded by deflectors 4 and 24 which extend from the front and back plates respectively, both deflectors and the burner terminating approximately midway between the front and back plates, the deflectors being so arranged that the air is directed in advance of the burner mouth, but sufficiently close to effect complete combustion. Fig. 3 shows in section the front having an upper central and two wing valves, which admit air to the hollow front, and natural draught regulators 31 and 27 on the front plate. The burner pipe 33 is enclosed in a sleeve 32, upon which a deflector 36 and the draught-regulating plate 27 are slidably mounted, the former being operated by rods 37. A spider 28, mounted on the sleeve 32, supports the cone deflector 4 provided with vanes 5, which may impart a tangential motion to the air. A sleeve valve 40, operated by rods 41, slides over the deflector 24 and regulates the air supply to the burner. The lining may be of brickwork 26, or an air-cooled back plate may be used, as shown in Fig. 6. Air is admitted at 62, 63 to the hollow back plate, which is provided with outlets 59 surrounding the flame opening, the outlets being formed in a ring 58 which is in grid form and filled with refractory material. In further modifications, the back plate is provided with tangential vanes, the vanes 5 project into the flame opening, the sleeve valve 40 is retracted toward the front plate, the air being admitted between the sleeve valve and the deflector 24,. and the denector 36 is integral with the sleeve 32. The plate 27 may also be integral with the spider 28 and may be provided with a hinged door for natural draught. The plate 27, deflector 4, sleeve 40 &c. may be made as one unit and hinged to the front plate.
