Abstract

173,630. Reid, J. Oct. 14, 1920. Furnace fronts; liquid-fuel fittings.-A furnace front is provided with interchangeable solid and liquid fuel fittings so that it may be readily adapted for burning either liquid or solid fuel. When burning oil, the fuel passage is closed at the front by a plate 74 carrying the burner sleeve 73 having a deflector 82, and is provided with a Venturi ring 81 from which extends an apertured sill 80. The fuel passage is shut off from the ash-pit by an inclined plate 101. The shield wall 92 has a valve-controlled air port 93 through which air passes and is deflected by an inclined wall 96 to a port 98 in the fuel passage casing 97. Air from the lining pockets 85 passes into baffles' 83 provided with air ports 84. When burning coal, the plate 74 and burner fittings. Venturi ring, sill plate and 'baffles' are removed as well as the plate 101 and are replaced by an ordinary dead-plate 104, Fig. 4, and door 106. Side valves are installed between the ash-pit flare and the lower ends of the upper shield wall.
