Liquid-fuel furnaces.-A hollow front for oilfired furnaces has an air-cooled lining 35, the air from which is supplied transversely to the flame from a burner 12 located in front of the rear plate 19 of the furnace front. The front shown comprises a front plate 1 having a flange 3 on which seats a closure 4 sliding on a sleeve 7, the closure being withdrawn when working under natural draught. The sleeve 7 also carries a conical deflector 13 and an outer air deflector 14 with spiral or straight blades 18. An air cylinder 28 encircles the end of the deflector 14, and has an inwardly-converging deflecting flange 30. The lining is formed of four pieces surrounding the opening in the rear plate 19 and having outer walls 36 and inner walls 37 with beads 42 to retain a fire-brick lining 43. Air passes from the hollow front through ports 40 to the lining, and is delivered thence transversely to the flame through the port formed between the fire-bricks 43 and the flange 30 of the cylinder 28. In modifications, the lining extends round the top and sides only of the opening in the rear plate, the arrangement of the air cones is varied, and the burner is mounted on the furnace door.
