Abstract

199,065. Kermode, J. J. Feb. 13, 1922. Liquid-fuel furnaces.-In a vertical boiler fired with liquid fuel, the combustion chamber B, Fig. 1, is formed by a refractory lining b<1> separated from the boiler shell by an annular space C in which air supplied to the combustion chamber is heated. Air enters the space C through a non-return valve h<1> provided in a casing H and passes into a casing D surrounding the burner E and provided with a non-return air-admission valve d<2>. An adjustable cone F, casing G and refractory extension b<2> are also provided within the casing D and opening leading to the combustion chamber. The rear portion of the lining b' may be carried upwardly and forwardly to form a deflector for the gases. According to a modification, the air enters the space C through a valve at the rear of the furnace and passes directly into the combustion chamber B through lateral openings near the front. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the burner casing is dispensed with, the burner E being mounted on the boiler shell in front of an opening e<2>. Air enters the casing H<2> through a non-return valve h<1> controlled by a regulating screw h<4> and passes in'to the annular space C leading into the combustion chamber through openings c<2>. Fig. 8 shows a modification in which the lining b' is separated from the boiler shell by a " dead " space C<1> and the air is heated in an annular duct C<2> formed outside the boiler shell and communicating with the combustion chamber through openings c<2>. This arrangement may be modified by providing passages in the shell A so that air heated in the space C<1> may pass into the space C<2>. In the modification shown in Fig. 10, air enters through valves h<1>, an annular space C<4> formed on the outside of the boiler shell and passes through openings c<5> into the annular space C and thence through openings c<2> to the combustion chamber. A preliminary heating of the air before it enters the annular passages surrounding the combustion chamber may be effected in a casing enclosing the bottom of the combustion chamber. Specifications 104,356 and 156,834 are referred to.
