Furnace fronts.-A furnace of the kind adapted for conversion to the use of either solid or liquid fuel and embodying oil-burning devices of the kind described in Specification 135,145 is provided with an air casing b, Figs. 2 and 3, surrounding the firing-opening a<1> in the front plate a. When burning liquid fuel, the firing-opening a' is fitted with a deflecting-cone h, h<1> which surrounds the inner end of 'the oil burner g<1> supported on a bracket f mounted on studs e' secured to a detachable plate c on the casing b. Air is admitted to the casing b through a damper d adapted to slide on the studs e'. An airdeflecting plate i the central portion i<1> of which is preferably made separate from the wing portions i<2> surrounds the burner. When converting to coal firing, the burner with the central portion of the air-deflecting plate, cone h, h' and plate c carrying the burner support is removed and replaced by a plate k, Fig. 4, carrying a short trunk k<1> and the fire-door k<2>. A shield j is provided to protect the inner side of the plate a. Figs. 8 and 9 show a modification in which the air casing b extends over the whole of the furnace front. When burning oil, the entrance to the ash-pit is closed by a plate m, Fig. 8, and air is admitted to the casing through a door l, a U-shape plate i serving to deflect the air before it reaches the burner mounted on the detachable plate c. When burning coal, the plate m and the burner fittings are removed and replaced by a plate k, Fig. 9, carrying a trunk k<1> and door k<2>. In both the modifications shown in Figs. 3 and 8, helical vanes may be arranged around the burner in the cone h, h'.
