Abstract

156,834. Kermode, J. J. June 20, 1919. Liquid-fuel furnaces.-In a steam-boiler furnace convertible for either coal or oil firing, a tubular casing B extends from the boiler front to the furnace and, when oil-firing is employed, has mounted within it a secondary casing D, preferably of conical form and situated on the furnace side of the burner so that the burner flame passes through it; further, the air supply to the casing is controlled by externally-operated means such as valved ports b<2> or the means described below. For coal firing, the casing D and the burner plate c<1> closing the front end of the casing B are replaced by a fire door and a tubular liner, which latter may be split as shown in Fig. 6. The casing D may be fixed, Fig. 4, or may be adjustable axially, either as a whole, Fig. 7, or as regards an inner part, Figs. 8 and 9, in order to regulate the air supply entering its front end, its other end being formed with a flange fitting the casing B. Further, the casing D may be imperforate or may have ports, Figs. 4, 7 and 9. The ports in the form shown in Fig. 9 are controlled by the axial movement of the inner portion which for this purpose either has ribs d<10> aligned with its ports and separated by air-cooled passages d<12>, Fig. 11, or is cast or otherwise provided with flanges d<14>, d<15>, Fig. 12. In the modifications last described the ports are some. what tangentially directed, Fig. 11. Specifications 18754/11 and 19058/11 are referred to.
