637,220. Supplying air to liquid fuel burners. WALLSEND SLIPWAY & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., KERR, J. B., and DOBBS, A. G. May 7, 1948, No. 12588. [Class 75 (i))] [Also in Group XII] A gas turbine combustion chamber comprises inner and outer chambers 1, 2 forming between them an annular space 3 for cooling air, a burner body 10 through which the primary air passes and a cylinder 5 through which the oil-laden primary air from the burner 12 passes which cylinder has external vanes 6 to impart whirl to secondary air entering the inner chamber 1. The inner chamber has a restriction ring or quarl 4 to increase the local velocity of the air and to deflect the air into the oil spray issuing from the nozzle 12. The vanes 6 whirl the secondary air in the opposite direction to that of the oil spray. The quantity of air passing through the cylinder 5 is controlled by a flame cone 7 operated by a draw rod 8. Oil is supplied to the injector 16 through a cock 14 having a safety device 15 to prevent unscrewing of a cap 17 and removal of the injector 16 until the oil supply is cut off. When the injector 16 is removed a balanced or manually operated flap 18 prevents high pressure air entering the engine room. The oil injector 16 is held in position by a cone piece 20 forming part of the cock 14. The combustion chamber is suitable for burning fuel oil, mixtures in which coal is held in suspension in oil, creosotes or creosote and pitch mixtures.
