779,248. Preventing furnace corrosion. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO., Ltd., STANSFIELD, R., and HOWES, E. L. Dec. 10, 1953 [Dec. 23, 1952], No. 32544/52. Class 51 (1). In order to reduce the deposition of sodium and vanadium compounds on the blades &c. of a gas turbine engine operating on petroleum residual fuel a small proportion of finelydivided carbon is formed in the combustion chamber in such conditions that at least a part of said carbon remains dispersed in the combustion gases passing through the engine. The carbon may be formed by continuously injecting a hydrocarbon fraction derived from a mineral oil into the flame zone of the combustion chamber. As shown, the combustion chamber comprises a primary zone 26 having a main burner 23 mounted in a chamber 24 disposed in an air entry elbow 20 and having air inlet apertures 25 and a swirl plate '28, a secondary zone in a flame tube 22 surrounded by a shell 21, and beyond the tube 22 a dilution zone to which air is supplied through the space between the tube and the shell. The carbon-producing oil is injected into the flame zone 27 through jets 29 disposed around the chamber. The oil supplied by the jets 29 may be about 6 per cent of the total oil supply.
