Abstract
1,018,423. Gas turbine combustion chambers. BENDIX CORPORATION. Dec. 4, 1962 [Jan. 15, 1962], No. 45827/62. Heading F1L. To improve fuel vaporization in a gas turbine engine combustion chamber 12 comprising an air casing 10 containing a cylindrical flame tube 22 a vaporizing dome 34 is mounted within the flame tube by bolts 36 and a lip 38 at the inlet end of the flame tube. Primary, secondary and tertiary air enters the flame tube through holes 50, 52 and 54 respectively. Air flowing inwards through holes 50, 52 causes a high pressure region A which deflects primary air towards the fuel nozzle 30 and secondary air downstream. Fuel from nozzle 30 impinges on dome 34 is vaporized, and then entrained and burnt with the circulating primary air. A portion of the burning mixture is recirculated to maintain dome 34 at a temperature above the boiling point of the fuel. Grooves 35 and air chamber 42 reduce heat losses from the dome. A small quantity of air is directed towards nozzle 30 through passages 48 to prevent carbon formation on the nozzle. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), a primary air guide ring 110 mounted over holes 50 directs air inwards at an angle inclined towards nozzle 30.
