Abstract
Equipment to homogenise the mixt. of hot gases and colder dilution gases leaving a combustion chamber consists of a number of cold gas injection pipes in the periphery of the combustion chamber, extending nearly to the centre, spaced so that the gas mixt. can pass between them. The pipes have adjustable nozzles at their open ends orientated so that the velocity of issuing gas has a component opposed to the velocity of the hot gases. They are rectilinear and are arranged in the form of a truncated cone with its apex directed upstream. Alternatively they can be in the form of a hyperbola giving a rotating stream opposed to the hot gas flow. In the cases where the gases are so hot that pipes protruding into them cannot be used, the nozzles are placed in the thickness of the refractory walls. The area of use is in the construction of combustion chambers producing hot gases for drying or for feeding gas turbines or jet engines, in which cold air is fed in to give a desired gas outlet temp. The equipment brings about mixing of the cold air, fed in along the chamber wall to avoid the necessity of a refractory wall, and the hot gases in the centre of the chamber, by injecting a part of the cold air counter-current to the gas flow, eliminating differences in temp. between the peripheral gases and the gases in the centre.
