Abstract

659,794. Jet propulsion engines. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd., COHEN, H., and DARTH, J. H. H. Dec. 15, 1944, No. 25261. [Class 110(iii)] [Also in Group XII] Means for reheating the exhaust gases of a gas turbine jet propulsion engine comprises a cylindrical pot 12, having an open end 13 facing downstream around which there is a fuel pipe 14 pierced with holes 15, attached to the truncated apex of the turbine exhaust fairing 8. Within the pot is an igniter 16. The presence and form of the pot 12 produces turbulence in the main gas stream and causes part of it together with entrained fuel to enter the pot where it is ignited. The resulting flame ignites the fuel sprayed radially outwards by the jets 15. The operation of the ignition may be effected by a single lever connected to the fuel control means and to the control of a variable area propelling nozzle as described in Specification 659,793. In the Provisional Specification an arrangement is described in which a series of fuel jets is arranged at a short distance upstream from the apex of the bullet in recesses within the profile of the bullet. These recesses have miniature trap doors to cover them when the fuel jets are not in use. In another arrangement the fuel jets are arranged upstream of the apex of the bullet in or near a part of the bullet which is of such material and design that it has a large heat capacity so that it will re-ignite the flame if it is extinguished. In both of these arrangements, means may be provided to drain the fuel supply piping where it is liable to get hot. and to blow cold air through the piping when the fuel is shut off.
