[Class 51 (i)] In a furnace front the air supply to the burner 24 is caused to enter in a direction opposite to that in which it ultimately enters the furnace, the air supply entering through an annular opening controlled by an annular damper 9 which can be moved longitudinally of the furnace front towards or away from the opening. The front comprises an inner air director 2 having internal air directing vanes 3, an outer air director 4 having internal vanes 5 and external vanes 6 to which latter is attached a cylindrical member 7 spaced from the outer end of the director 4 to form the annular air inlet controlled by the damper 9. The outer end of the member 7 is closed by a front plate 12 having four segmental air ports 14 controlled by an annular damper 15 supported on inwardly projecting guides 16 slidably mounted in the plate 12. The plate 12 is also provided with a lighting and sight hole 20 normally covered by a transparent shutter. A flame cone or air diffuser 25 surrounds the burner 24. For movement towards or away from its seating, the damper 9 may be attached to rods slidably mounted in the plate 12, may be in screw-threaded engagement with the inner ends of rods rotatably mounted in the plate 12 or, as shown in Fig. 3, may be attached to rods 30 screwed at their outer ends into nuts 36 held in brackets 35. The front may be provided with a casing 29 forming a forced draught chamber and may have an inlet branch 38 for the supply to the furnace of exhaust gases from oil engines. When forced draught is being used, the damper 15 may be held in closed position by L-shaped clamps 40, Fig. 5.
